Treatment of Urge Incontinence

The treatment of urge incontinence is always initially medical.  When pelvic floor exercises are not enough, there is a class of medications which is very effective in the treatement of the Overactive bladder.  These medications belong to a class of medicines called anticholiergics.  The bladder is constantly under the influence of the “go” and the “don’t go” nerves.  Which ever of these signals is strongest decides whether the bladder will relax and continue to hold more urine or whether the bladder will empty on it’s own.  The anticholinergics drugs block some of the “go” signals to shift the balance in favor of the “don’t go” nerves.
