About Dr. Vardy

Doctor Michael D. VardyDr. Michael D. Vardy is a Board Certified in Obstetrician / Gynecologist with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a graduate of one of only 47 accredited training programs in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery/Urogynecology. He is also Board Certified in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery/Urogynecology, and is in the first group of physicians in the country to obtain this status.  He is a leader in hormone and urogenital research, presenting his work nationally and internationally. He is the 2002 recipient of the American Urogynecologic Society/June Allyson Grant award which seeks to identify leaders in the field. He was awarded the 2002 American Urogynecologic Society’s Best Manuscript Author for his work with Estrogen, Tamoxifen and Raloxifene and the urogenital system.

Again in 2004, he was awarded the fields’ best research manuscript for his work with pelvic ligament bio-mechanics.  Dr. Vardy is a recognized expert in female incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, menopausal medicine, chronic pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction.  He has become the region’s leading expert in the use of synthetic materials and in the management of mesh complications in pelvic surgery.  He has been the Director of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and Urogynecology at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Englewood, NJ, since 2002.  In 2005, he joined Mount Sinai School of Medicine and was appointed Fellowship Director to train other physicians in the sub-specialty of Urogynecology.  In 2006 he became Division Director at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.  In 2007, his program became the 27th Urogynecology training program to be accredited by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  In October, 2007, he joined a multidisciplinary team on a mission to Niger, Africa to help treat women with fistulas (holes formed between the vaginal and bladder or rectum) resulting from obstructed labor.  In June, 2008 he was promoted to Associate Professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.  He also holds adjunct academic titles with Albert Einstein College of Medicine and NY-Presbyterian/Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.

In August 2008, Dr. Vardy took a hiatus from the role of fellowship director in order to expand and focus his efforts on clinical urogynecology and patient care with the establishment of NY Urogynecology.  The Manhattan practice was established at 1107 5th Avenue, Suite 1E, New York, NY.  In February, 2010 he was asked to return as fellowship director at Mount Sinai School Medicine and in August, 2010 he once again was approved by the American Board of Ob/Gyn to head up the fellowship.

In 2012 and again in 2013, Dr. Vardy was named to the list of Top Doctors for Gynecology

There are currently 46 training programs in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery/Urogynecology which are accredited by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  After a 15 year effort with the American Medical Association (AMA), Urogynecology was recognized as the newest sub specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Urology.  The recognition by the AMA also required all accredited programs to obtain accreditation from the ACGME (the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education).  On January 23, 2013, Dr. Vardy’s program was in the first group of programs in the country to become ACGME accredited.

On June 21, 2013, the first Board Certification exam was given in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery/Urogynecology.  As is always the case with a new certification process, many physicians who had never done a formal 3-year fellowship in urogynecology were permitted to sit for the exam.  We now, for the first time, can say we are Board Certified in Urogynecology with the passage of this exam.  Dr. Vardy joined the first group in the country to obtain this status and he is one of the only urogynecologists in the New York area to have also completed a 3 year accredited training program.
